Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met February 19, 2018, called to order by the president, with seven directors present and two absent. The meeting opened with audience recognition on safety following a district incident, featuring the police chief and the high school principal. Board members discussed security measures, the single school resource officer funded by a grant, and the illegality of arming teachers in Pennsylvania, while residents raised questions about additional SROs, social media, and a guardian program. The superintendent reported on the Moon Area Education Foundation.

The board approved the January 8 and 22 minutes and February financial reports unanimously. It approved the monthly bills across five funds, authorized filing Act 1 index millage exceptions, and approved the 2018-2019 Parkway West budgets for general operating and jointure. The Allegheny Intermediate Unit Program of Services budget was approved, with Moon Area's estimated contribution. A services agreement with El US, LLC for instructional services to hospitalized Southwood Hospital students passed, as did the Kennedy School of Driving end-of-course skills test program for no cost.

The board approved revised policies including 103, 103.1, 311, and internet and social media guidelines. It approved girls rugby and academic games field trips, student clubs Women in STEM and a Cheer Booster Club, and numerous personnel actions including leaves of absence, resignations, tenure for an employee, and spring coaches. Two motions to table the District Digital Leader contract position and conferences passed. The request for exception to Policy 202 non-resident enrollment passed with two directors voting against. The board adjourned at 9:15 p.m. after an employee and others extended condolences to the family of a resident, who died that week.
