Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met March 12, 2018, in the High School Board Meeting Room, called to order by the president. All nine directors were present, along with four staff members, and about 30 audience members. The board had met in executive session beforehand on personnel and litigation.

The board approved the minutes from February 12 and 19, plus the March financial reports, and authorized the monthly bills across the General, Activity, Food Service, and Capital Reserve funds. It accepted the fiscal-year-2017 audit from Maher Duessel, approved a donation from a resident for the Challenge Program, and adopted calendar revisions including a new last student day of June 6, 2018. The board approved the Allegheny Intermediate Unit 2018-19 services agreement, the Project Succeed consortium renewal with Keystone Oaks, and a Letter of Agreement with Region 4 for students experiencing homelessness.

The board authorized two vehicle purchases from Allegheny Ford at lowest bid: a pickup truck (replacing vehicle M-2) and a utility transit van (replacing box truck M-6). It retired Policies 248 and 310 and approved a supplemental District Digital Leader contract position. The board approved numerous field trips, including Odyssey of the Mind, the MAHS Orchestra festival, the High School music all-state trip, and the Speech and Debate trip to Washington, D.C.

The board approved a large personnel package, including a long-term substitute special education teacher, several medical and family medical leaves, extra-duty pay, coaches, cafeteria monitors, and STA drivers. It approved a non-resident enrollment exception and accepted the resignation of an employee as assistant track coach. All votes passed on roll call, with one director voting in disfavor of Item XVII. In board comments, a director discussed the Curt Baker lawsuit and proposed reverting to one business and one workshop meeting per month. The meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
