Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met March 26, 2018, in the High School Board Meeting Room at 7:10 p.m., called to order by the president. Directors were present, with three absent; one director arrived at 7:16 p.m. The board had met in executive session beforehand to discuss personnel and litigation.

The board approved the monthly bills across five funds for the period March 11–23, 2018. It approved revisions to the 2017-2018 calendar setting June 7 as the last day for students, June 8 as an Act 80 safety-training day, and June 11 as the last half-day for teachers. The board approved a professional architecture and engineering services proposal with CannonDesign for Hyde Elementary School and a construction management contract with The Foreman Group. It accepted a donation from Chevron for the STEAM Engines program and approved Moon Area logo artwork donated by Allegra Pittsburgh and Image 360, with two directors voting against.

The board approved first and final readings of revised policies 200, 201, 202, 906, and 918. It authorized dance team trips to Hershey (April 20–22) and a girls rugby club trip to Murfreesboro, Tennessee (May 18–20), both with no anticipated district costs. Conferences approved included a conference for an employee and a scoring conference for an employee. Personnel actions approved an unpaid medical leave for an employee, a medical leave for a science teacher, a family medical leave for a facilities director, mentors for the school year, a STA van driver, and administrative salary adjustments, with one director voting against the salary item.

Following a public comment about a last-minute prom guest policy change prompted by the Parkland shooting, a director attempted to move to delay the dance policy change for one year but rescinded it. The board took no formal vote on the prom decision, deferring to administration. It recessed to executive session at 9:25 p.m. and returned at 9:55 p.m., with the president telling a parent she would hear from administration within a day or two. The board adjourned at 10:00 p.m.
