Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met April 22, 2019, in the High School Board Meeting Room, called to order by the president. Directors present included the president, and five other directors; two directors were absent.

The board approved district bills for the period of April 5–18, 2019. It approved a five-year SchoolPointe web-host contract renewal and Resolution No. 2019-1 expanding the Thorn Run Transportation District to include largely vacant southeastern Township land, with the Moon Transportation Authority asked to develop roadways. The board authorized a lease application with First National Bank of Pennsylvania for the one-to-one program and district-wide technology replacement.

Other approvals included an anonymous donation for the high school music program, renewal of the Project Succeed agreement with Keystone Oaks as a drop-out prevention measure, and adoption of textbooks for AP Government and Politics, seventh and eighth grade Social Studies, eleventh grade History, Ethics, and Film. The board approved a purchase for state championship rings for the boys basketball team (25 rings), two resolutions supporting cyber charter funding reform, and recognition of the Moon Area Orchestra Parents Organization as a sanctioned booster club.

Field trips approved included the high school band to Cedar Point (June 13), the TSA team to Washington, DC (June 28–July 2), the marching/symphonic band and orchestra to Virginia Beach (April 2020, substitute costs), and gifted K-5 students to the Pittsburgh Zoo (April 26).

Personnel actions accepted a high school chemistry teacher's resignation, approved extra pay for a staff member's bus duty at Brooks Elementary, approved six summer-2019 workers and an STA driver (both pending clearances), and approved an intermittent family medical leave for an employee. The board appointed an assistant principal beginning May 1; all directors voted in favor except one director, who voted no on that item. The meeting adjourned at 6:49 p.m., after which the board met in executive session.
