Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met June 10, 2019, in the High School, with the president presiding. 7 directors were present; 2 were absent. The board approved the May 13 and May 28 minutes and June financial reports, then authorized the monthly bills for May 24 to June 10. It approved two settlement agreements and mutual releases tied to a lawsuit against Guy's Mechanical Systems, Travelers Casualty, J.C. Pierce, Eckles Architecture, and Allegheny City Electric.

The board adopted revised 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school calendars and set 2019-2020 meeting dates, with an amendment moving workshop meetings to 7 p.m.; the meeting-dates vote split on 2 directors, and the amended vote split on 1 director. It approved the MEA letter of understanding for a Cyber Coordinator, a Moon Aqua Club AAU diving proposal, renewals of Prevention Network (CLASS Academy) and Wesley Family Services agreements, an Allegheny Intermediate Unit agreement for a Primary Expressions speech-language classroom, the Moon Area Band Parents Organization after-school lesson program, recognition of the Singers Booster Organization, and a swimming field trip to Geneva, Ohio.

The board took first, second, and third readings of numerous revised policies covering field trips, admissions, wellness, hazing, homeless students, vehicle drivers, disability nondiscrimination, asthma and epinephrine, student rights, the student assistance program, drones, internet use, contracted services, and relations with educational institutions and the intermediate unit. In personnel it approved a childrearing leave for a teacher, summer help, and a large batch of Extended School Year staff at Brooks and Bon Meade Elementary, plus fall, winter, spring, and fall sports coaches and event workers, and independent contractors including a school physician, dentist, optometrist, MAPS coordinator, and prevention education specialist. It also approved an agreement with the Allegheny County Department of Human Services and created a new position of Assistant to the Superintendent, the sole dissent cast by the president. The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
