Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met June 24, 2019, under the president, with eight directors present and one director absent. After an executive session on personnel and litigation, the board approved the monthly bills, moved funds from the General Fund to the Capital Reserve fund, and adopted the 2019-2020 General Fund Budget with a 22.10 millage rate. It approved final tax levy resolutions adding a 0.98 mill real estate increase, the Homestead/Farmstead exclusion resolution, and an insurance package via HHM Insurors, which was a reduction from the prior year.

The board approved a Wesley Family Services school-based mental health agreement at the middle school, renewed the Allegheny Intermediate Unit social worker services, and signed a memorandum with the Education Support Professionals Association on summer custodial assignments. It authorized a three-year Studio Ten Photography agreement, approved the Moon Area High School Choir to operate, adopted salary step-placement guidelines, and appointed two school safety coordinators. It accepted a BioOX system donation from the Moon Aqua Club and gave first readings to revised policies on drugs and alcohol, student misbehavior, and parent boosters.

On personnel, the board approved a childbearing leave for an employee, an interim principal rate for an employee at Bon Meade Elementary, a summer paraeducator, fall coaches, the Clerk to the Board, a bus driver, and an ESY paraeducator. It accepted the resignation of the Director of K-12 Curriculum and Instruction and approved a Transportation Operations Supervisor.

The board approved two debt resolutions: a general obligation note for equipment and a note for computers. Approval of the Assistant to the Superintendent job description proved contentious; the initial vote split three-to-three with one abstention, sending the board to executive session. Upon return, the board approved the amended description, adding a February 1, 2020 termination date, with only the president opposing.
