Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met on October 28, 2019, in the High School Board Meeting Room, called to order by the president, who noted the board had earlier met in executive session over personnel and litigation. Seven directors were present; two were absent.

The board approved the monthly bills for the period of October 11–24, 2019, and approved an audit review of the Moon Area Education Foundation. It accepted a PCCD grant support letter for safety and surveillance equipment, approved a Questeq contract for Erate filing and services, renewed the Moon Area Band Parents Organization, and accepted gifts including a camera from Moon Cable Access Television and memorabilia from a resident. It approved the use of a bilingual book for a literacy event at Mooncrest Community Center at no cost.

The board approved a settlement and release agreement with a resident, passing 5–2 with the president dissenting, and approved a release and settlement agreement with First American Equipment Finance, again 5–2 with the president dissenting. It approved an interim assistant high school principal at a daily rate, 5–2 with the president dissenting. Other approvals included a teacher's blended-learning study, daily field trips, an Academic Games trip to Atlanta, a European trip, several conferences, and a cross country trip to Hershey. The board approved a first reading of Policy 808 on food services and tabled a personnel item.

During non-agenda audience recognition, a resident pressed the board on hiring a superintendent transparently. The president favored a search, while a director argued for promoting an internal candidate, and another director cited private concerns about the past selection process. The meeting adjourned at 8:09 p.m.
