Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met November 18, 2019, at the High School, called to order by the president. The board approved the October 14 and 28 minutes and the November financial reports, and approved the bills. It accepted a general release agreement with the Cost Company, accepted a snowplow purchase, approved a Combustion Service & Equipment contract for propylene glycol in the new chiller, and approved a Frontline Education contract for time and attendance and HR software modules, with pricing locked for 2 years. The board also approved an amended liability release with Animal Friends "Therapets," an internship agreement with Global Wordsmiths as Lead School in the Language Access Project, the 2019-2020 daily field trips list, and a special board meeting for December 16 to approve a preliminary 2020-2021 budget.

The board approved first readings of policies 104, 209, 335 and 911, second readings of policy 808 and its attachment, and a final reading of policy 702.1 on crowdfunding. In personnel, the board tabled Item XII with the president voting against, then reconvened and approved a large package: a medical leave for a custodian, sabbaticals for 2 employees, an employee's retirement, rescinded and re-approved bus-monitor pay at Allard, extra pay for 2 employees, department-head compensation, club sponsors, substitute remediation facilitators, a homebound instructor, winter coaches, STA drivers and monitors, and an employee's resignation.

The meeting's dominant discussion concerned the superintendent search. A board member explained the board's plan to name the homebound instructor acting or interim superintendent after the current superintendent's contract ends in January, with an open search only if needed. A resident criticized the process; the resident threatened a board member, prompting 3 other board members to condemn the threat. The board heard reports on Parkway West enrollment and a 2020-2021 budget, the Moon Transportation Authority's Stevenson Mill and Portvue projects, and approved the auditorium bid from Kozi Media Design. The board adjourned at 9:11 pm.
