Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met December 2, 2019, presided by the president, approving a series of motions on roll call votes. The board adopted the December financial reports, authorized payment of the monthly bills for the period November 15–27, 2019, and extended authorization to administration to pay December bills through month's end. It approved participation in the Allegheny Intermediate Unit joint purchasing program, a placement agreement for a student, a services agreement with PA Connecting Communities for a student, and a nonresident enrollment exception under Policy No. 202.

The board approved the Best Buddies Club at the middle school, a list of daily field trips, and three athletic travel approvals: gymnastics to St. Mary's High School January 3–4, wrestling at Grove City January 24–25, and the dance team at Hershey April 17–19. It adopted three policies on second reading—104 (nondiscrimination), 209 (health examinations), and 911 (news and media relations)—and finalized Policy 808 (food services) on third reading.

On personnel, the board authorized the assistant to the superintendent to fill vacancies before the January 13 meeting, approved leaves of absence for 4 teachers, hired a middle school special education assistant, accepted the retirement of the head kitchen staff, approved a pre-student teacher, adopted spring coaches and winter event workers, and hired 2 STA drivers and a monitor.

The superintendent's reports covered the Moon Transportation Authority's Thorn Run project, the Stevenson Mill and Portvue designs, and upcoming Keystone retake testing. An employee congratulated the president on her presidency and welcomed a new board member. Board members praised fall sports, including the football team's first conference title in 16 years, and honored a departing board member, who served 12 years. The meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m.
