Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met January 13, 2020, at the High School, called to order by the president. The board approved the November 18, December 2, and December 16, 2019 minutes along with the January financial reports, and authorized payment of the monthly bills for the period November 28, 2019, to January 9, 2020. It approved the preliminary General Fund budget for 2020-2021, released the Erate Request for Proposal for district-wide services, approved the 2019-2020 daily field trips, and authorized travel for the girls rugby club and the speech and debate team's state tournament. The board adopted three policies on third and final reading: Policy 104 on nondiscrimination and discriminatory harassment in employment, Policy 209 on health examinations and screening, and Policy 911 on news and media relations.

On personnel, the board accepted three cafeteria resignations, approved an employee as a Middle School cafeteria monitor, and authorized the Acting Superintendent to fill vacant positions before the January 27 meeting. It approved spring coaches across track and field, softball, and girls rugby, plus a long-term substitute special education teacher at the High School and Hyde Elementary. The board also approved a range of leaves of absence, including childbearing, intermittent and family medical, and medical leaves for staff at several schools.

The board appointed an employee as Acting Superintendent for up to one year, effective January 15, 2020, and an employee as Acting High School Principal, effective January 15, 2020. The superintendent appointment passed on a roll call vote with one director voting against and one director abstaining; the director who abstained said he would provide documentation for his abstention. The superintendent's office recognized the boys soccer, football, and girls cross country championship teams. Parkway West Career and Technology Center reports covered bill and personnel approvals, a 2020-2021 budget, an anatomy learning table for health-care students, and a School Pointe website agreement. The Moon Transportation Authority update flagged the Market Place project as a priority and raised the possibility of redistricting. The meeting adjourned at 8:37 pm.
