Virtual Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area School District Board of Education held a virtual workshop meeting on March 23, 2020, called to order at 7:05 p.m. by the president, with all nine directors present and the superintendent among the administrators. The board approved the monthly bills for the period March 6 to March 18, 2020, across the General Fund, Activity Fund, and Food Service. It approved the revised 2019-2020 school calendar, allowing 6 in-service days to be converted into Act 80 instructional days and changing spring break days in April into instructional days. The board authorized a four-year lease for 650 Lenovo laptops through First National Bank of America, allocating funds early so students without computers at home could use them for remote learning.

The board accepted a request for proposal for auditing services covering 2020 through 2023 from Zelenkofske Axelrod, the lowest of 3 bidders. The vote passed on a roll call with one director dissenting, after he and others raised concerns about abandoning the longtime auditor and questioned whether the district should have rebid. The board also accepted a bid from DQE Communications for Lit Fiber WAN services spanning the 2020-2021 through 2024-2025 school terms. On personnel, it approved a childbearing leave of absence for a teacher at the high school, beginning about May 20, 2020, and accepted the retirement of the building manager at McCormick Elementary, effective August 4, 2020. The superintendent reported the district was preparing for remote learning, with administrators contacting families individually. The meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m. on a roll call vote.
