Virtual Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area School District Board of Education held a virtual workshop meeting on April 27, 2020, called to order by the president, with nine directors and administrators in attendance. Prior to the meeting, the board convened in executive session to discuss personnel and legal matters.

The board approved bills covering the period April 11 to April 23, 2020, spread across the General Fund, Activity Fund, Food Service, and Capital Reserve. All directors voted in favor on a roll call. The board approved a one-year NWEA renewal agreement for MAPs online testing for the 2020-2021 school year, with all directors voting in favor. It approved an agreement with Precision HR Solutions for hourly substitute coverage, passing on a roll call with one director abstaining. An agreement with Kelly Educational Staffing for professional substitute coverage passed with two directors voting in disfavor.

On personnel, the board approved childbearing leaves for two employees, accepted the retirement of a science teacher, and approved a volunteer for middle school cheerleading. All directors voted in favor.

The superintendent reported that plans were underway to honor seniors, with graduation likely held in July under social distancing guidelines, and contingency plans considered. The board discussed graduation options, including a possible ceremony at a drive-in if traditional gatherings were not feasible under the governor's guidelines. In response to a public question, the superintendent said caps and gowns would be distributed once the stay-at-home order was lifted, with virtual graduation plans being prepared and an honors night scheduled to award scholarships. The meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
