Virtual Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held a virtual workshop meeting on August 24, 2020, called to order by the president. Eight directors were present, with two directors absent. The board approved the monthly bills for the period August 7 to August 20, accepted a donation from ABM Solutions for Hyde playground equipment, and approved PlanCon K for the 2020 bond issue. It also approved an agreement with Southwood Psychiatric Hospital for inpatient educational services, an Emergency Instructional Time Template, and a request for exception to Policy 202 on non-resident enrollment.

An employee from ABM Solutions reported on facility projects, including window film, weatherproofing, and hot water replacements across seven schools, with roofs at Bon Meade and Hyde ahead of schedule. The superintendent flagged pending items such as a Hyde chiller with a 12 to 16-week lead time and a High School cooling tower needing replacement. The board accepted five resignations and approved several teachers for the 2020-2021 year, including a teacher at Allard and a teacher at Brooks. It approved multiple FFCRA childcare leaves, unpaid leaves, mentors, a department head, high school extra-duty positions, a Digital Leader, and a compensation increase to a former acting superintendent. Fall and winter coaches were approved, along with STA bus and van drivers.

During audience recognition, the board addressed questions about Parkway's virtual model, sports social distancing, and IEP services. Board members discussed the newly opened Thorn Run/Robert Harper interchange, the district's readiness to return to in-person instruction once metrics improve, and thanked staff for their work during the first day of school. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 pm.
