Virtual Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its virtual business meeting on October 12, 2020, at 7:00 p.m., with the president presiding and nine directors present. The board approved the minutes from the September 14, 21, and 29 meetings along with the October financial reports, approving the monthly bills for the period September 25 to October 9, 2020, across the General Fund, Activity Fund, Food Service, and Capital Reserve. The board accepted a Reflex grant for the Special Education K-4 classroom at Bon Meade Elementary School.

In personnel actions, the board approved a teacher at the Middle School and a High School/Athletic Custodian. It granted leaves of absence to five employees, approved two Safety Care Trainers, authorized extra pay for Middle School Lower House Support Coordinator roles, and approved a student teacher. The superintendent reported students returning to school and urged caution around traffic lanes. The Student Activities Committee reported the fall play will be staged outdoors with four casts, the PSAT is set for October 17, and virtual parent-teacher conferences for November 3.

During audience questions, the board discussed continuing Zoom streaming even after returning to in-person meetings, noting higher attendance. Members addressed how virtual students would be marked absent and whether sick students could receive credit, with an employee noting attendance guidelines come from the state and another director suggesting administrators decide on absence accounting. The board confirmed attendance appears on high school transcripts and that the Reflex grant is accepted by the district, not the individual teacher. The meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
