Virtual Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its February 8, 2021 virtual business meeting at 7:00 p.m., with eight directors present and one director absent. The board approved the minutes from January 11 and January 25, 2021, along with the February financial reports, and authorized the monthly bills across the General Fund, Activity Fund, and Food Service. It approved a payment to ABM Building Solutions for pool optimization installation at the pool.

The board approved the preliminary General Fund Budget for 2021-2022, with one director voting against it. It also approved the Allegheny Intermediate Unit Program of Services Budget, the Parkway West General Operating and Jointure Budget, and the Title I and Title IIA Non-Public School Agreements with the AIU. The board approved the 2021-2022 school calendar and amended it to move graduation from Saturday, June 4, 2022, to Friday, June 3, 2022.

On personnel, the board accepted the retirement of an employee, approved leaves of absence for three employees, approved internal movements for two custodians, authorized a driver, and approved two volunteer assistant coaches. It also authorized the superintendent to fill vacant positions before the February 22 meeting.

The superintendent reported on efforts to secure 1A vaccines for the district. A director reported that Parkway West approved budgets and ratified a memorandum of understanding allowing students to return to make up missed coursework, with teachers paid a daily rate. The board heard public comments on basketball practice space, the high school calendar, and returning students to in-person instruction five days a week. One director criticized another director for voting against the preliminary budget without comment, and the other director congratulated a graduate. The meeting adjourned at 8:47 p.m.
