Virtual Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its February 22, 2021 virtual workshop meeting at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the president. Eight directors were present, with one director joining at 7:12 p.m.; the superintendent and the solicitor also attended.

The board approved district bills for February 6–19, 2021, split between the General Fund, Activity Fund, and Food Service. It accepted the Allegheny Intermediate Unit's OnRamp Grant for Remote Learning and approved a book donation from the Moon Public Library for incoming kindergarten families at no cost.

On personnel, the board approved several hires pending clearances: a Special Education Assistant at Brooks Elementary, a Library Assistant at Hyde/McCormick Elementary, a Dishwasher/Server at Bon Meade Elementary, and a Custodian at the High School. It approved two internal movements and accepted the resignations of a High School Custodian and a Track Assistant Coach. The board also approved a long list of spring event workers and spring coaches for track and field, boys rugby, boys lacrosse, boys volleyball, softball, and baseball, all contingent on district reopening and state approval of spring sports.

During the meeting, a director requested the Thorn Run Interchange be renamed the Robert C. Harper Interchange, which had won a safety award; an employee will raise this with the Moon Transportation Authority. The superintendent addressed audience questions about returning students to in-person learning, noting that the state currently recommends 100% virtual instruction and that safety guidelines complicated full reopening for more than 4,000 students. The meeting adjourned at 9:16 p.m.
