Virtual Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its April 26, 2021 virtual workshop meeting at 7:15 p.m., called to order by the president, with nine directors present and the superintendent reporting. The board approved the monthly bills for the period April 10 to April 23, 2021, across the General Fund, Activity Fund, and Food Service. It approved a memorandum of understanding with the Moon Area Education Support Professionals Association regarding 403(b) retirement accounts, authorized a partnership with Moon Township to re-park lots at Brooks and Bon Meade Elementary schools and the Maintenance Building, and approved a yearly renewal of a MAPS support counselor with PK&S, LLC for 30 days. The board approved a charter school funding reform resolution, a new High School club called SHOUT, and a student withdrawal. It endorsed a DSG Strength and Conditioning Proposal but then voted to table it, with the president and a director dissenting.

The board accepted the retirements of four employees, along with resignations from two employees, and approved leaves of absence for two employees. It awarded tenure to a teacher and approved numerous Extended School Year summer hires, including teachers, paraeducators, personal care assistants, and a speech language pathologist. It also approved pre-student teachers, interns, and an STA driver. During audience recognition, directors responded to community members upset about a Social Studies assignment that appeared on the news; the superintendent apologized and members agreed staff training was needed, with a director calling for a Diversity Equity Committee subcommittee. The meeting adjourned at 8:22 p.m.
