Virtual Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its June 14, 2021 business meeting virtually at 7:15 p.m., with seven directors present and a director presiding. The board accepted the immediate resignation of a director. The superintendent reported that the district plans to return to a five-day in-person schedule while following mitigation plans, that a letter to a parent about the summer remediation program is forthcoming, and that a mask order runs through the end of June. The superintendent also recognized two student athletes for their achievements at the AAA WPIAL Track and Field Championships and PIAA AAA titles.

The board approved the May 10 and May 24 minutes along with the June financial reports, and authorized the monthly bills across the General, Activity, Food Service, and Capital Reserve funds. It approved a capital project, the district’s Comprehensive Plan for submission to the Pennsylvania Department of Education, and agreements with Kelly Services, the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, the Holy Family Institute MAPS Program, and Wesley Family Services to add a mental health therapist at Moon Area High School. Two policies received first reading and four received second reading.

On personnel, the board accepted the retirement of an employee, the resignation of a coach, and a medical leave for an employee. It hired numerous summer staff, including remediation teachers, cafeteria workers, and paraeducators, and approved a payroll specialist. The board also authorized fall coaches, fall event workers, two STA drivers, and independent contractors for the 2021-2022 school year, including a school physician, dentist, optometrist, MAPS coordinator, prevention specialist, and social worker. It approved the MySchoolBucks online payment system. The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
