Virtual Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held a virtual workshop meeting on June 28, 2021, called to order by the president, with six directors present and two absent. The superintendent reported that the Summer Remediation Program at Brooks Elementary had about 330 students in its second week, and the ESY program would begin under an employee.

The board approved the appointment of a director to fill the vacancy left by a former director's resignation, for a term from July 1 through December 1, 2021. It approved the monthly bills for the period June 12 to June 25, 2021, and adopted the 2021-2022 General Fund Budget with a millage rate of 22.6746. The board approved the final tax levy resolutions, Resolution No. 2021-1 for the Homestead/Farmstead tax exclusion, and a commercial package, volunteer accident, and Workers' Compensation insurance policy through HHM Insurers for the period July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022.

The board approved field trips for the Summer Remediation Program, the High School Girls Varsity and JV basketball teams traveling to California University of Pennsylvania August 5-7 with no anticipated district cost, the Honors Choir to New York City April 1-3, 2022, and a fully funded Aquaponics Seminar conference for two employees.

On personnel, the board approved a medical leave for a custodian, internal movements of two administrative assistants, summer remediation teachers and nurses, the Clerk to the Board, and two resignations. It approved fall coaches and approved high school and middle school department heads and coordinators for 2021-2022; all voted in favor except two employees, who opposed the Varsity Girls Soccer head coach.

The board then attempted to fill the board director vacancy. After closing nominations, the vote split four to four between two candidates, and the motion failed. A special meeting will be scheduled to fill the vacancy. The meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
