Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its August 9, 2021 business meeting in the High School Auditorium at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the president. Seven directors were present; one director was absent. The board first amended the agenda to add two motions, both passing unanimously on a roll call vote: one to amend the 2021-2022 Health and Safety Plan to require full mask wearing for all students and staff, and one to accept a settlement agreement in a civil action in U.S. Federal Court, Western District.

Following lengthy audience testimony on masking, the board approved the minutes from July 1 and July 19, 2021, and a set of financial reports, and approved the monthly bills. It approved first reading of revised Policy No. 218.9 on Bullying/Cyberbullying and report forms, and third and final reading of revised Policy No. 150 on Title I comparability of services.

On personnel, the board approved a long-term substitute kindergarten teacher at McCormick Elementary, named mentors and inductees, approved an internal movement for a custodian, and hired a custodian. It accepted several resignations and retirements, approved department heads, authorized the superintendent to fill positions before the August 23 meeting, and approved fall, spring, and event coaches. A supplemental agenda accepted the resignation of an employee, rescinded her mentor/inductee approval, approved a dishwasher/server, authorized additional hiring, and approved a driver.

The board voted unanimously to adopt the full mask wearing update to the Health and Safety Plan. In the settlement agreement vote, all directors voted in favor except one director, who voted in disfavor. The meeting adjourned at 11:06 p.m.
