Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its September 27, 2021, workshop meeting at 7:05 p.m., called to order by the president, with seven directors present and two absent. The solicitor read a statement addressing a recently settled federal Equal Pay Act lawsuit brought by teachers, clarifying that a portion of the settlement came from insurance companies rather than district funds, that the agreement bars the parties from commenting on the terms or the merits of the claims, and that the board considered the matter concluded.

The board approved bills for the period September 11–24, 2021, split across the General Fund, Activity Fund, Food Service, and Capital Reserve. It approved a partnership agreement with the University of Mount Union to place student teachers in the district for the 2021–2024 years, and approved the list of daily field trips for the 2021–2022 school year, amended to be subject to the protocols in place at the time of each event.

In personnel actions, the board approved leaves of absence for four employees, accepted the resignations of two employees, and approved an employee as Executive Secretary to the Superintendent. It authorized the superintendent to fill a Payroll Specialist vacancy, approved an internal movement for an employee, approved pre-student teachers and student teachers, approved extra-duty pay for two employees, approved event workers and STA drivers, and approved an employee as Girls Soccer Assistant Coach. Supplemental agenda items accepted the resignations of two employees and approved an intermittent family medical leave for an employee.

During audience recognition, the superintendent discussed ongoing construction at Hyde, noting capital projects would begin there next year, and addressed COVID contact-tracing protocols. The board declined to act publicly on a request for a homeschooled freshman to attend the homecoming dance, deferring the matter to an executive session.
