Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its business meeting on January 10, 2022, at 7:00 p.m., with the president presiding and all nine directors present. The superintendent recognized fall varsity sports teams, including the girls' soccer program with four state championships, and presented on a pre-construction growth plan anticipating 450 to 600 new homes. A lengthy audience discussion dominated the evening, with numerous parents urging the board to delay making masks optional, citing rising case numbers; an employee argued the timing was inappropriate, while the president supported the mask-optional plan.

The board approved the December 6 and December 15 minutes and a bundle of financial reports, voted to pay the monthly bills, and accepted Resolution 2022-1 committing the district not to raise taxes above a 4% index for 2022-2023. On the health and safety plan, the board approved CDC recommendations to reduce quarantine time. An amendment to postpone the mask-optional date by two weeks failed on a roll call vote, with only three directors voting in favor.

The board approved a three-year IXL electronic software contract, acknowledged an ABM Building Solutions post-installation energy savings report, and approved a MASD emergency instructional time template. It retained two individuals of Weiss Burkardt Kramer as special education counsel and recommended appointing a board member to the Moon Transportation Authority. Field trips for daily activities and the girls' rugby team, winter indoor track participation, and a staff conference for an employee were approved.

The board accepted resignations of two employees, approved medical and childbearing leaves for six employees, approved a mentor pairing, additional compensation for two department heads, an internal movement, several supplemental teacher hires, event-worker substitutes, STA drivers, and authorized the superintendent to fill positions before the January 24 meeting. The meeting adjourned at 10:25 p.m.
