Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its March 14, 2022 business meeting at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the president, with nine directors present and a solicitor in attendance. The board spent considerable time discussing the Moon Transportation Authority and its LERTA district, hearing from a director of the Moon Transportation Authority about project financing, tax-dollar diversions, and the opt-in/opt-out process for property owners. Directors raised concerns about the long-term financial commitment, representation, and the renaming of an interchange.

The board approved the February minutes and a range of financial reports, then authorized payment of the monthly bills. It authorized a local depository RFP, year-two capital improvements for 2022-2023, and approved the Allegheny Intermediate Unit Program of Services Budget, with the district's contribution estimated at a specific amount. The board also approved life insurance and AD&D renewal policies.

In a notable division, the board approved a settlement agreement and general release with an employee, with one director voting in disfavor. Several field trips were approved, including a PMEA All-State Festival trip and a National Academic Games tournament in Knoxville with no anticipated district cost. The board approved first readings of numerous revised policies covering behavior support, weapons, terroristic threats, hazing, dating violence, purchasing, and school security.

Personnel actions included approving a long-term substitute extension, accepting resignations and retirements, approving medical and unpaid leaves of absence, internal movements, extra-duty pay, remediation facilitators, student teachers, coaches, and authorization to fill various positions. An unpaid leave for a custodian was tabled. The board voted to add an agenda item to approve Henderson Brothers to review insurance policies at no cost, but the underlying motion failed, with six directors voting in disfavor. The meeting adjourned at 9:36 p.m.
