Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its April 25, 2022 workshop meeting at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the president, with nine directors present and a meeting that ran until 8:08 p.m.

The board approved the March 14 and March 28 minutes and a batch of financial reports, then authorized the monthly bills for the period March 26 to April 22, 2022, split across the General Fund, Activity Fund, Food Service, and Capital Reserve. It approved the LERTA Resolution No. 2022-2, the resolution that drew the evening's only dissent: a director voted against it and another director abstained, with documentation filed for both. The board also approved a waiver agreement in lieu of expulsion for a student, with one director abstaining, and passed an affiliation agreement with Duquesne University's School of Education running five years from June 1, 2022.

On personnel, the board accepted the resignations of several staff members, including a staff member and the retirements of a music teacher and a Grade 2 teacher, and accepted the departure of the Director of Fiscal and School Services, whom colleagues thanked for saving the district a significant amount of money. It approved new hires at set hourly rates, leaves of absence, a Grade 2 coordinator, and the 2022-2023 department heads, coordinators, and summer help. The board authorized the superintendent to fill remaining positions before the May 9 meeting.

Other actions included approving the K-4 virtual summer remediation program running June 20 to July 21, a sidewalk repair quote from Decked Out by Dan Construction Co. not exceeding a specific contract amount, and a five-year copier and printer lease with The Wilson Group effective July 1, 2022. The board approved daily field trips, two Speech and Debate national tournament trips to Washington, DC and Louisville with no district cost, and passed first and second readings of numerous revised policies covering threat assessment, vehicle drivers, weapons, hazing, dating violence, procurement, and emergency preparedness.
