Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its May 9, 2022 business meeting at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the president. Seven directors were present—the president, two other directors, and four others—with one director absent. Following an executive session on personnel and legal matters, the board approved the minutes from February 14 and 28, 2022, along with the March financial reports. It approved the monthly bills for the period April 23 to May 5, 2022, and named Dollar Bank as the district's bank depository.

The board appointed a director as Board Treasurer for a one-year term beginning July 1, 2022. It approved a demographics consulting agreement with Davis Demographics & Planning, an affiliation agreement with Slippery Rock University for teacher development lasting 5 years, and a donation to the Lacrosse Club. In a notable division, the board approved Astroturf Corporation's proposal to build new tennis courts, with one director voting against. Other approvals included a scholarship donation, a renewal of the Project Succeed dropout-prevention program, a Carnegie Learning professional-learning contract, and a two-year IXL contract.

The board took first, second, and third readings of numerous revised policies covering attendance, electronic records, threat assessment, school bus drivers, weapons, hazing, dating violence, procurement, and emergency preparedness. It approved a wide range of personnel actions, including cafeteria hires at Brooks and Allard Elementary, acceptances of resignations from two employees, leaves of absence for two employees, multiple summer ESY hires, 2022-2023 department heads and coordinators, coaches, and authorization for the superintendent to fill vacancies before the May 23 meeting. One director raised questions about the Moon Transportation Authority's finances, and another director asked about summer remediation format. The meeting adjourned at 9:07 p.m.
