Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its August 8, 2022 business meeting at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the Vice President, with eight directors present and one director absent. The board approved the July 18 minutes and the August financial reports, then approved the monthly bills across the General, Activity, Food Service, and Capital Reserve funds; a director questioned Waste Services and technology equipment costs before the roll call passed unanimously. The board approved the 2022-2023 meeting calendar, tabled the health and safety plan summary, and approved daily field trips to the Benedum Center and Pittsburgh Playhouse/Point Park on six dates, plus a cost-free boys baseball trip to Myrtle Beach, March 16-20, 2023. It approved the choir's annual request to operate and continued partnerships with 3 Minute Fitness and Durkin Sports Performance for six strength camps at no cost to the district.

In personnel, the board hired ten staff members for the 2022-2023 year, including two special education life skills teachers, a speech language pathologist, a grade 3 teacher, an assistant high school principal, and several assistants and a dishwasher, all pending clearances, and accepted two resignations and one internal move. It approved several leaves of absence, a student teacher intern, safety care trainers, and volunteer winter hockey coaches, and authorized the superintendent to fill eight additional positions before the August 22 meeting. During board comments, a resident voiced concerns about the Moon Transportation Authority, saying the district lacks flexibility and wants to revisit it, while two residents discussed pursuing new business opportunities tied to the MTA and referenced a marketplace contract. The meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m. by unanimous voice vote.
