Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its December 5, 2022 business meeting at 6:30 p.m., called to order by the president. Eight directors were present, with one director absent. The board approved the November 21 minutes and the December financial reports, approving the monthly bills split across the General, Activity, Food Service, and Capital Reserve funds. It accepted a donation from Moe's Southwest Grill to be divided between Allard Elementary School and Hyde Elementary School for Battle of the Books. The board approved Forever Lawn's quote to replace the stadium turf and a trench drain cover, pending solicitor's review.

The board approved a varsity gymnastics field trip to St. Mary's High School January 6-7, 2023, and authorized the full list of daily student field trips for the 2022-2023 year, including visits to FedEx, Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne University, and the Pittsburgh Zoo. On personnel, it approved a long-term substitute English teacher, a building assistant at Brooks Elementary, mentors, and extra-duty pay for an Odyssey of the Mind coordinator. It accepted the retirement of the athletic director effective July 18, 2023, and approved leaves of absence for two employees. The board approved coaches, an event-worker videographer, a student teacher, STA bus drivers, and authorized the superintendent to fill vacancies including a school counselor and long-term substitute math teacher before the January 9 meeting. Audience recognition featured a student earning a merit badge, prompting discussion of taxes, homelessness assistance, and curriculum language options. The meeting adjourned at 8:06 p.m.
