Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its March 13, 2023 business meeting at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the president, with seven directors present and one director absent; the board had met in executive session beforehand on personnel and legal matters. The board approved the February 13 and 27 minutes and the March financial reports, approved the monthly bills split across the General, Activity, and Food Service funds, and adopted the membership list for the Future Ready Comprehensive Planning Steering Committee for the 2024-2027 plan. It authorized a one-time donation to the Moon Area Hockey Club and approved settlement and release agreements for two students. The board approved the girls rugby team's trips, including a retro-approved Carolina Ruggerfest visit, and approved the list of daily field trips for the school year. It passed first readings of ten policies and procedures covering enrollment, student expression, dress and grooming, controlled substances, threat assessment, electronic devices, emergency preparedness, school security, Safe2Say Something, and transportation, and second readings of five more covering discipline, family and medical leaves, social media, non-school organizations, and volunteers. On personnel, the board accepted the resignations of three staff members, approved a family medical leave for an employee, hired an employee as a remediation program tutor/facilitator, and authorized the superintendent to fill paraprofessional, cafeteria, and long-term substitute math teaching positions. Superintendent reports were empty, and the board heard updates on Parkway West's new masonry program, the Moon Transportation Authority, and student activities. In board comments, a director questioned a Sheetz expenditure while another director defended it under existing policy and noted the MTA generates roughly $8 million for the district; the second director also asked about next year's budget, with a third director citing cuts and a figure for students.
