Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met April 17, 2023, at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the president. Eight directors were present—the president, Barr, Callahan, Bogatay, Zieger, Harper, Kammerer and Scappe—with an employee absent. The board approved the minutes from March 13 and 27, 2023, and a set of April financial reports. It approved the monthly bills for the General, Activity and Food Service funds. The board engaged Foreman Program and Construction Managers as district program manager during the conceptual phase for upcoming projects, capped at a contract amount with hourly rates ranging from $90 to $210.

The board accepted a scholarship donation from a family for a cheerleading graduate, renewed the MAPS program support counselor contract with PK&S, and approved the triennial Special Education Plan effective July 2023 through June 2026. It accepted book donations from the Moon Library and approved an updated Future Ready Comprehensive Planning Steering Committee, plus the Moon Area Quarterback Club bylaws. The board passed second readings of ten policies covering enrollment, student expression, dress, controlled substances, threat assessment, electronic devices, emergency preparedness, school security, Safe2Say Something, and transportation, and third readings of five policies on discipline, family leaves, social media, non-school organizations and volunteers.

The board approved field trips for the gymnastics and soccer state-title recognitions in Harrisburg, a marching band trip to Toledo in October costing a contract amount, and a list of daily field trips. In personnel, it accepted the retirements of an employee and the Pupil Services Director, hired two special education staff members, approved a medical leave, an internal movement, pre-student teaching, winter varsity coaches, a volunteer coach, and authorized the superintendent to fill several vacant positions. After an audience exchange on the marching band and school security, the board adjourned at 8:51 p.m. All motions passed unanimously on roll call votes.
