Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its May 8, 2023 business meeting at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the president. Nine directors were present; one director was absent. The board approved a large personnel package, including appointments of an assistant director of K-12 Curriculum and Instruction/School Safety and Security Coordinator, a pupil services director, and a high school assistant principal. It accepted the retirements and resignations of three employees, approved several medical and family leaves of absence, and approved summer ESY staff, volunteer and head coaches, a stipend adjustment for boys volleyball coaches, and authority to hire paraprofessionals, cafeteria workers and bus drivers before the next meeting.

The board approved the April 17 minutes and May financial reports, authorized payment of the monthly bills, and accepted two checks from the Moon Area Education Foundation and Special Olympics of Pennsylvania. It approved participation in the Allegheny Intermediate Unit Joint Purchasing Program, renewed preschool early intervention and Pre-K Counts lease agreements with the AIU, and authorized a purchase of two table saws for the high school Vo Tech lab from Rockler Woodworking and Hardware. It approved a settlement and release agreement for a student, a Student Assistance Program letter of agreement with the Human Services Administration Organization replacing Wesley Family Services, a contract with Pediatric Therapy Specialists through 2025, and a release and indemnification agreement with Animal Friends for its Therapets therapy-dog program, pending solicitor review of insurance.

The board appointed a treasurer for a one-year term, approved the revised 2023-2024 school calendar, the Future Ready Comprehensive Planning Professional Development Committee membership, the World Cultures Club, and tabled the Wrestling Booster Club bylaws. It approved a list of daily field trips, authorized a boys varsity basketball trip to Pensacola in December 2023 with no district cost, approved first and final readings of travel reimbursement and conflict of interest policies, and approved a conference for the assistant director of K-12 Curriculum and Instruction/School Safety and Security Coordinator. The meeting adjourned at 7:44 p.m.
