Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its September 11, 2023 business meeting at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the president, with all 10 directors present and a crowd of 100+; WPXI and KDKA were in attendance, and a moment of silence marked the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The board approved the August 14 and 28 minutes and a suite of financial reports, then authorized payment of the monthly bills across the General, Activity, Food Service, and Capital Reserve funds. It granted the superintendent authority to approve bills through October 9, approved a Comprehensive Services Agreement with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, cancelled a September 25 workshop in favour of a September 27 town hall on the demographic and feasibility study, appointed two residents to the county tax collection committee, and adopted the state-required 2023-2024 health and safety plan.

The board approved field trips for the cross country, marching band, symphonic band, orchestra, softball, and Spanish student teams, plus the full list of daily trips, and separately approved the baseball team's March 2024 trip to Cocoa Beach. It also adopted 2023-2024 school bus routes, middle school club authorizations, and first-and-final readings of 5 federal-programme compliance policies. On personnel, the board rescinded an employee's approval as high school building manager, accepted an employee's resignation as assistant nurse, hired an employee as a long-term grade 6 teacher, granted leaves of absence to two employees, approved mentors and safety care trainers, made internal movements, authorised the superintendent to fill a broad range of open positions before October 9, and approved STA drivers.

The meeting's extended non-agenda segment addressed the gymnastics program, with a parent and students defending a coach and calling for censure of a director, whom residents accused of misconduct. Board members pushed back on the accusations and defended the director's right to question the program. After audience comments, the president said the board would consider the remarks, and the meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
