Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its November 20, 2023 business meeting at 7:10 p.m. in the High School Auditorium, called to order by the president. Nine directors were present; one director was absent, and the board had met in executive session beforehand. The superintendent praised the girls' soccer team's third state title and thanked five departing members.

The board approved the October minutes and financial reports, then authorized the monthly bills. It approved a drainage easement with the Township of Moon at J.H. Brooks Elementary, an Allegheny Intermediate Unit BCBA agreement, and two AIU Mutual Assistance Group documents. The board also adopted an updated Emergency Operations Plan and approved several field trips, including a swimming trip to Ohio and the Academic Games nationals in Atlanta.

The board severed ties with the Moon Area Gymnastics Association, citing liability, policy breaches, and financial imbalances, with a timeline to be set through talks between the administration and the gymnastics association. An investigative committee cleared a staff member and reported that a non-district coach resigned.

On personnel, the board hired two building assistants, a speech language pathologist, two custodians, and two STA drivers. It accepted resignations including a staff member and several coaches, awarded tenure to a teacher, approved several leaves of absence, and authorized the superintendent to fill additional positions before the December 4 meeting.

During public comment, numerous residents opposed the gymnastics decision and questioned why a coach had not yet been approved, with the solicitor noting the board need not justify personnel votes. A resident marked his final meeting. The board adjourned at 8:52 p.m.
