Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its January 8, 2024 business meeting at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the president, with nine directors present and a solicitor in attendance. The board approved the minutes from December 4 and December 8, 2023, along with the January financial reports, voting unanimously on a roll call. It then approved bills for payment across the General Fund, Activity Fund, Food Service Fund, and Capital Reserve Fund, also passed unanimously.

The board accepted the resignation of a district representative on the Moon Transportation Authority and appointed an employee to the role, effective immediately. The superintendent reported that the Varsity Girls Soccer team won its sixth state title, and the board recognized the gymnastics team. Directors discussed Parkway West Career and Technology Center's proposed 7.5% budget increase for 2024-2025 and a masonry project reaching 75% funding. On the Moon Transportation Authority, the board learned that an employee retired, another employee replaced them, and the district would receive funding in 2024 and 2026.

The board approved a gymnastics field trip to St. Mary's High School, a list of daily field trips through May 2024, and a conference for three staff members at The Reading League in Charlotte. Personnel actions included accepting four resignations and approving medical and childbearing leaves for four employees. The board hired a long-term substitute Grade 6 teacher, a dishwasher/server, approved an employee to teach Algebra, named an employee as mentor to the new teacher, and approved several internal movements and a substitute custodian. It authorized the superintendent to fill positions including a long-term substitute Spanish teacher, cafeteria roles, paraeducators, assistants, custodians, and bus drivers before the January 22 meeting, approved two volunteer wrestling coaches, and accepted the resignation of a track and field coach. The meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
