Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held a workshop meeting on January 22, 2024, called to order by the president at 7:05 p.m. Eight directors were present, with one director absent; the board had earlier met in executive session. The meeting opened with a moment of silence honoring a deceased educator. The board heard the superintendent's report on the MASD 2024-2027 Future Ready Comprehensive Plan, which will undergo 28 days of public review before a vote at the February 26 meeting. Discussion covered growing enrollment, an English Language program now serving over 300 students across 34 languages and possibly requiring an additional teacher, and social-emotional learning.

The board approved the monthly bills for the period of January 6-18. It voted to hire Axis Architecture, P.C. for architectural and engineering services at a percentage of construction cost, paid by the Bond Issue Fund. In a notable split, the board voted against approving the Parkway West Career & Technology Center's 2024-2025 General Operating and Jointure budgets, with only one director voting in favor. Other approvals included authorizing Student Transportation of America to apply for the 2023 Clean School Bus Rebate, a dance team trip to a different state, and an amendment to the wrestling trip transportation. The board also approved a list of daily field trips.

On personnel, the board accepted the resignations of two employees, authorized an involuntary transfer of an employee, and approved several long-term substitute positions, internal movements, student teachers, and coaches, including the Track & Field head coach. It authorized the superintendent to fill positions such as Grade 6 ELA teacher, cafeteria, paraeducator, and bus driver roles before the February 12 meeting. The meeting adjourned at 8:48 p.m.
