Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met February 12, 2024, at 7:00 p.m., with eight directors present and the Vice President presiding; a director was absent. The board approved the minutes from January 8 and 22 and the February financial reports, then approved the monthly bills across the general, food service, and activity funds. It accepted a grant donation and approved Carnegie Learning onsite coaching and professional development through a Title II grant.

On finance, the board initially moved to table Resolution No. 2024-1 appointing both Stifel, Nicolaus & Company as investment banker and Dinsmore & Shohl LLP as bond counsel, then amended it to appoint only Stifel as investment banker through December 31, 2025, dropping Dinsmore & Shohl as bond counsel. It renewed lease agreements with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit for its Preschool Early Intervention Program and Pre-K Counts Program, both running July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, and approved a transition memorandum of understanding with AIU Head Start. The board also approved the 2024-2025 high school program of studies.

Financial support for students included funding for girls rugby and boys rugby, plus approved field trips for the speech and debate team to the state tournament and the national tournament, and dance team trips. It approved a list of daily field trips and conferences, including the superintendent's trips to Orlando and to Japan and South Korea.

In personnel, the board accepted an employee's retirement, rescinded and re-approved dishwasher/server approvals, approved a custodian, a medical leave, a mentor pairing, an internal movement, department head compensation, and restructured high school musical staffing. It approved numerous coaches, event workers, STA drivers, and authorized hiring across cafeteria, paraeducator, and transportation roles. During public comment, a resident advocated preserving Hyde Elementary, and the superintendent responded that consolidation would improve education and keep transportation costs unchanged. The meeting adjourned at 7:48 p.m.
