Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held a workshop meeting on February 27, 2024, called to order by the president at 7:05 p.m. Directors present were the president, Zieger, Callahan, Wise, Kammerer, Sainovich, and Gill; White and Simmons were absent, with Simmons arriving at 7:20 p.m. The board had met in executive session beforehand to discuss legal and personnel matters.

The superintendent delivered a report, announcing the death of a custodian who served as the district's temporary courier. The superintendent advertised two town hall meetings—March 4 at Hyde Elementary and March 6 at Brooks Elementary—and congratulated the boys basketball team on reaching the WPIAL finals, the gymnastics team on placing second, and a student wrestler on her championship. An auditor from Zelenkofske Axelrod LLC reported an unmodified opinion on the 2022-23 financials with a healthy fund balance.

The board approved the monthly bills across four funds. It accepted a donation from Forever Lawn for baseball and softball batting cage turf, approved varsity football uniforms from Riddell, and approved the 2024-2027 Comprehensive Plan along with required state reports. The board adopted the 2024-2025 school calendar, renewed participation in the Kennedy School of Driving end-of-course skills test program, and approved girls rugby field trips to three Ohio locations and one Pennsylvania site with no anticipated district cost. Daily field trips for the current school year were also approved.

On personnel, the board accepted a resignation, approved an intermittent medical leave for a custodian, adopted spring sports coaches, approved substitute custodians and STA drivers, and authorized the superintendent to fill cafeteria, paraeducator, building assistant, custodian, substitute custodian, and bus driver positions before the March 11 meeting. A resident raised concerns about property values if Hyde Elementary closes and asked about a Spanish translator at the town halls, while another resident questioned whether the feasibility study accounted for all 600 new housing units and whether a new administration building was planned. The superintendent said anticipated growth had been considered and noted pressing needs at the middle and high schools. The meeting adjourned at 7:42 p.m.
