Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held a workshop meeting on April 22, 2024, called to order by the president. Eight directors were present; one director was absent. The board had met in executive session beforehand to discuss legal and personnel matters.

The board approved the monthly bills for the period March 30 to April 19, 2024, split between the General Fund, Activity Fund, and Food Service Fund. It exonerated the tax collectors from collecting unpaid 2023 real estate taxes. The board approved the purchase of iPads for grades 5 and 6 from Apple, Inc., funded by the General Fund and ESSER Grant. It authorized Tait Engineering, Inc. for land surveying services and renewed a three-year agreement with IXL Learning for student licenses in grades K-10.

The board approved a high school marching band trip to Washington and Jefferson College from July 28 to August 2, 2024, and a list of daily field trips for the current school year. In personnel actions, it accepted a resignation, approved a building assistant at Bon Meade Elementary, granted an employee an educational sabbatical, and approved an employee's family medical leave. It approved internal movements, pre-student teachers and student teachers for 2024-2025, authorization to fill cafeteria and transportation positions before the next meeting, a bus driver, and spring and fall sports coaches.

A board member asked which policy covers school closures. An employee said none exists locally, explaining that law requires 15 days' notice of a public hearing, after which the board votes about three months later. The board scheduled the Hyde Elementary School public hearing for May 13, 2024, with a final decision expected at the August 2024 meeting. The meeting adjourned at 7:19 p.m. All votes passed on roll call or voice votes.
