Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its May 13, 2024 business meeting at 7:40 p.m. in the Middle School Auditorium, called to order by the president. Eight directors were present; one director was absent. The board approved the minutes from April 8 and April 22 and a set of May financial reports, then authorized the monthly bills across the General, Activity, Food Service, and Capital Reserve funds.

The board appointed a new board treasurer for a one-year term beginning July 1, 2024. It approved a cooperative sponsorship agreement with Sewickley Academy for football for the 2024-2025 school year, pending WPIAL/PIAA approval. Several cafeteria purchases were approved as lowest bids: a TriMark walk-in freezer at Brooks Elementary and a walk-in cooler/freezer at the Middle School; a convection oven at the High School; a Douglas Equipment convection steamer at the High School; and a Curran Taylor hot food serving counter at Allard Elementary. The board also approved a proposal from Franklin for carpet and rubber tile flooring at Bon Meade Elementary, funded from the Capital Reserve fund.

The board granted first reading to five revised policies (006, 109, 137, 137.1, 137.2), approved daily field trips, and took personnel action including accepting resignations and terminations, approving numerous leaves of absence, hiring ESY summer staff, approving extra-duty pay for a musical director, internal movements, event and summer help workers, student teachers, STA drivers, and authorizing the superintendent to fill various positions before the May 28 meeting. During public comment, a resident questioned the flooring cost, which an employee explained includes asbestos tile removal. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
