Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education held its September 23, 2024, workshop meeting at 7:00 p.m., called to order by the president. Seven directors were present—the president, Zieger, Sainovich, White, Simmons, Kammerer, and Callahan—with the superintendent, D'Alesio, Drylie, Daniels, and a solicitor in attendance; Wise and Gill were absent. The board had met in executive session beforehand on legal and personnel matters.

The superintendent outlined district safety measures, including a Safety Director, armed School Resource Officers, controlled access, surveillance, drills, and crisis teams, plus mental-health and counseling programs, and addressed community questions about metal detectors. A resident raised concerns about a design-phase bill for the Middle/High School and Maintenance Facility renovations, set to begin in 2025, and the still-under-design indoor sports center.

The board approved bills, approved a three-year natural gas contract extension with NRG/Direct Energy effective September 1, 2025, and approved a Kelly Services agreement to raise substitute daily rates. It approved a Waterfront Learning Services agreement with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit for the Moon Area Cyber Academy, accepted a volleyball net system donation, approved a no-cost baseball field trip to Ripken Facilities, and approved the 2024-2025 daily field trips. It approved conferences for DiDomenico, Beeson and Rojas, and Schreiber, Hyland, and Heasley.

On personnel, the board accepted five resignations and approved hires including an ELD teacher, a special education life skills substitute, a dishwasher/server, and a cafeteria breakfast worker. It approved two medical leaves, a bus monitor extra-duty position, mentors, internal movements, rate adjustments for two employees, student teachers, volunteer winter sports coaches, spring sports head coaches, an STA driver, and authorized the superintendent to fill positions before the October 14 meeting. The meeting adjourned at 7:24 p.m.
