Board of Education Meeting

The Moon Area Board of Education met on October 14, 2024, at 7:08 p.m., with the president presiding. Seven directors were present; one director attended by conference call and one director was absent. The board approved the minutes from September 9 and 23 and the October financial reports, then authorized the payment of bills across the General Fund, Capital Reserve, Food Service, and Activity funds. It approved a work truck from Hondru Fleet under a Co-Star contract from Capital Reserve funds. Other approvals included a Project Succeed agreement with Keystone Oaks for 2024-2025, a services agreement with the Human Services Administration Organization, high school and middle school club operating requests, a dance team trip to Youngstown, Ohio, a middle school eighth-grade trip to Gettysburg and Hershey Park, and a full list of daily field trips. The board also approved three professional conferences.

In personnel actions, the board accepted the resignations of a Grade 6 special education teacher and a girls basketball assistant coach, and hired or approved numerous positions, including special education teachers, a long-term substitute grade 4 teacher, an assistant nurse, an elementary cafeteria lead, and several bus monitors, internal movements, mentors, student teachers, tutors, supplemental math instructors, and winter and spring sports coaches. It authorized the superintendent to fill additional positions before the October 28 meeting. The superintendent addressed the cross country and track and field coaching situation, explaining that personnel matters are handled in executive session and that the head coach selects assistant coaches. Following the vote to adjourn at 7:27 p.m., audience members urged the board to retain an assistant coach, and the superintendent said he had spoken with the assistant coach and that the district's focus remained on the students.
