Environmental Advisory Committee Meeting

The Moon Township Environmental Advisory Council met on August 10, 2016, and approved the minutes from its June 1 meeting. The council reviewed statistics from the June 3 Recycling Day, which drew 883 participants and collected 111,896 pounds of electronics, along with 593 pounds of materials for Creative Reuse. Members briefly discussed battery disposal and recycling options. A council member is leading efforts to establish a social media presence, with an update expected at the next meeting. The council is awaiting final design approval from an employee for the "At Your Door" magnet; two council members have identified vendors who can provide quotes for production. A member of the Comprehensive Plan implementation committee reported that the committee is evaluating zoning recommendations for the Marketplace Boulevard area, including the Chevron property and surrounding undeveloped land near Hirshinger Road, Hookstown Grade Road, and Montour Run Road. The recommendations will address building type and style, signage, lighting, greenspace, and benches. A public hearing will be held once the development plan is ready. The council agreed to review a list of potential projects submitted by a former staff member. Under new business, the council expressed interest in supporting weekend cleanups at the future Riverfront Park site along the Ohio River; a council member will request weekend participation opportunities. The township has 10 solar panels available for use, with two possible locations in Moon Park for demonstration purposes. Contractors have submitted installation quotes, and funding will be considered in the 2017 township budget. The council reviewed plans for a senior living community on Broadhead Road, noting the inclusion of undisturbed meadows, existing wooded areas, tree plantings, and a stormwater retention pond, and expressed approval of the environmental aspects.
