Environmental Advisory Committee Meeting

At its February 14 meeting, Moon Township’s Environmental Advisory Council reviewed a revised site plan and post-construction stormwater management narrative for a minor land development at CarRight on University Boulevard, the former Kelly dealership. A council member noted the plan still included Kousa dogwood trees that drop berries, undesirable at a car dealership, and another council member agreed to recommend native plants instead. The stormwater plan uses underground detention to control runoff and replicate preconstruction infiltration.

The council continued planning two upcoming public events. For the Public Awareness Weekend on March 9-10, members prepared talking points from prior events. For Earth Day’s “Can You Dig It?” on April 22, a council member will build a “Goods from the Woods” display. A council member contacted the Audubon Society, which can provide 150 plants, and is getting pricing from Bednards. A council member showed prototypes for an egg carton planting activity; members agreed to proceed and will bring cartons to the March 14 meeting. The council selected the “Snowy Northeast Native Wildflower Mix” from Ernst Conservation Seeds at $104 per pound, with a council member providing soil. A council member reported finding vendors for local honey tasting, prices ranging from $6.50 to $12.00 per 12 ounces, and will follow up with a farmers market contact. Wooden spoons will be collected and composted.

Other business included a March 7 Board meeting where Allegheny County will present a Tobacco Free Parks award proclamation. The council approved sending a revised Sustainability Strategic Plan to the Parks/Rec Board and then to the Board of Supervisors. A council member provided wayfinding sign examples and is seeking vendors. A June 2 Recycling Day flyer will be sent with the spring utility bill. The council voted to cancel June and July meetings and discussed possibly developing a Moon Apiary for pollinators, to be revisited later this year.
