Environmental Advisory Committee Meeting

The Moon Township Environmental Advisory Council began its November 8 meeting by discussing how to fill an open council seat that will be vacated when a council member’s term ends December 31. Members agreed to review contacts for potential candidates and will post the opening on the EAC Facebook page and through MCTA, directing interested individuals to send resumes and letters to the Board of Supervisors. In old business, a council member reviewed the council’s 2024 goals and visioning session, emphasizing that the EAC spends significant time on land use plan reviews but has not received feedback or revised plans from the Planning Commission. A council member noted that with the Planning Specialist now serving as staff liaison, communication should improve. A council member also raised concerns about erosion and sedimentation controls at construction sites; a council member said any identified issues should be reported to him or the Planning Specialist for follow-up with the Township Engineer. A council member updated the council on 2024 Earth Day activities, set for Sunday, April 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Robin Hill Park, which is also celebrating its centennial. She has contacted Creative Reuse, Sir Speedy Printing, and the Pittsburgh Aviary, and will meet with the Planning Specialist to discuss sponsorships and potential food vendors. The council discussed including a climbing wall and involving the Historical Society. A council member reported on her Pollinator Pathway work, noting a recent presentation at the Montour Run Watershed Association dinner and a completed pathway at OLSH High School. She is seeking new sites and volunteers, with Olson Park, Robin Hill, and the Sr. Rene Procopio Activity Center in Mooncrest identified as possibilities. The Planning Specialist reviewed the 2024 electronics recycling date, set for Saturday, June 1, and will circulate an updated list of accepted items. A council member asked about recycling containers for parks; a council member explained they have been tried but often become contaminated. A council member also expressed interest in recycling at Rhema Christian School, and a council member offered to raise the matter with school administration. The meeting adjourned at 6:59 p.m.
