Environmental Advisory Committee Meeting

The Moon Township Environmental Advisory Council met April 10 and approved the March 13 meeting minutes. The council reviewed the Board of Supervisors’ request to examine current landscape ordinance requirements for planting on engineered steep slopes, discussing suitable tree selections and root systems. A resident offered comments on stabilizing slopes with plantings. Regarding the Apex at Diamond Ridge land development, the council noted the proposed tree selection had improved from the preliminary master plan and aimed to provide comments to a planning specialist by April 12. The council authorized up to $200 to purchase milkweed plugs for the Moon Township Garden Club’s Plant Giveaway & Exchange on May 11. A council member reported that she and another member had explored signage for Robin Hill Meadow, reaching out to the Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program for replication, and reviewed signage examples. For Earth Day 2024, the planning specialist asked volunteers to be on site by noon on April 21. The council delayed discussion on native planting in parks until the May meeting, when more members could attend, with potential presentation to the Board of Supervisors. The planning specialist reported that the April 6 electronic recycling event with JVS Environmental had no issues; JVS will attend additional dates in August and October. A council member noted she would meet with Public Works before the June 1 Recycling Day. The council member discussed a Columbia Gas project impacting the Montour Run Trail, having met on site with NiSource and the trail council, and said she would keep the council updated. The council member and another member will attend a FedEx event on April 24, and the council member will attend the Montour Trail Council Tunnel Opening on May 10. During public comment, a resident raised the Board of Supervisors’ Monarch Pledge and the dog park’s master planting plan. A council member suggested inviting the Public Works Grounds & Facilities Director to a future meeting. The council announced its next meeting for May 8 at 6 p.m. and, due to the number of outstanding items, will not pause meetings this summer. The meeting adjourned at 7:14 p.m.
