Environmental Advisory Committee Meeting

The Moon Township Environmental Advisory Council met June 11 and approved minutes from its March, April and May meetings. The planning specialist reviewed year-to-date expenditures through May 31, noting that general spending stood at $1,842.10 and that the full $3,000 Green Initiatives allocation remained unspent. Anticipated outlays include tire recycling costs for Recycling Day and planned plantings at Olson Park. A council member proposed using leftover Green Initiatives funds to overseed the stormwater detention pond being installed as part of the Philomena Drive stormwater project. The member identified a PennDOT-approved seed mix from Ernst Seeds and a comparable mix that also supports the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge and wildlife habitat. The council discussed the proposal, and the planning specialist said she would review it further with township management.

On Recycling Day, held earlier in 2025, the council reported just over 300 cars participated, with 252 tires recycled. ReStore attended in place of Construction Junction, but attendees faced issues because ReStore accepts a different range of items. A council member noted that Construction Junction has greater storage capacity and can handle a wider variety of materials. The council discussed car counts, construction material recycling, and a similar event at the Clearview location. The planning specialist said she would contact her Clearview counterpart for details, and a council member suggested reaching out to other ReStore locations for additional capacity.

The planning specialist updated the council on the Olson Park native planting project, noting that the installation date for a new sign is pending. Once a concrete date is set, a council member said she would begin sourcing the preferred plants. The council also reviewed steps taken to meet the 2025 action items for the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge. No member announcements were made. The next meeting is scheduled for July 9 at 6 p.m.
