What this is, and what it is not
It is ZIP 15108, not Moon Township. The federal file records a donor's mailing ZIP,
and 15108 is a Coraopolis ZIP that covers most of Moon plus parts of Crescent, Findlay and
Robinson. Moon's own boundary is outlined in the map; the dots outside it are real
contributions from the rest of the ZIP.
Nobody is on this map alone. Cells holding fewer than five donor households are not
drawn at all — — cells covering — households were
dropped for that reason. The FEC publishes every donor's street address; a newspaper should
not redraw it. What is left is a neighbourhood pattern, which is the part that is actually
news.
"Lean" is a judgement, and it is recorded. A committee counts as Democratic or
Republican from the FEC's own party field where it has one. ActBlue and WinRed carry most
small-dollar giving and are treated as Democratic and Republican conduits. Corporate and
trade PACs that genuinely give to both — McKesson, Calgon Carbon, the American Chemistry
Council — are unaligned, and are excluded from the red/blue balance rather than
shoved to one side. Each cell's tooltip shows what share of its money was aligned at all.
