Where Moon Township crashes
Between 2004 and 2024, PennDOT recorded 4,525 crashes inside Moon Township — about 215 a year. They are not spread evenly. University Blvd alone accounts for 796 of them — more than the next two streets combined.
Each dot is a location; bigger dots mean more crashes at the same place. Numbered pins are the ten worst, listed below. Roads and township boundary drawn from OpenStreetMap.
Crashes grouped into roughly 110-metre cells and named by the streets that appear most often in them, so a junction is not split across four squares.
| # | Where | Crashes | Injured | Killed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | University Blvd / Patton Dr | 104 | 92 | 1 |

Crashes cluster in the afternoon rather than the morning, and most happen in clear daylight on dry roads — not in the weather people worry about.
The dip in 2020 is the pandemic, not a safety improvement. The apparent flattening at the right-hand end is the reporting lag described below.
PennDOT projects touching Moon Township that are under construction or in development. Districtwide contracts — bridge washing, curb ramps, guide rail — are excluded, because listing them here would imply work in Moon that may happen anywhere in the district. Many of these span several municipalities; where they do, the others are named, and the dollar figure is the whole contract, not Moon’s share. Projects PennDOT has not scheduled carry a placeholder date in the source, shown here as “no date scheduled” rather than as a plan.

The crash record stops at 2024. PennDOT publishes on a rolling lag of roughly a year and a half, and the county republishes once a year. There is no 2025 or 2026 data anywhere — not here, and not on the state’s own portal, whose copy of this same file stops in 2020 (checked 2026-08-27). If a recent year looks calm, that is the calendar, not the road.
We tried to show whether the money works, and could not. The obvious story is to take a finished project, count crashes before and after, and say whether it helped. We ran it. The result does not support publishing:
At 6 to 37 crashes per street per year, those swings are noise. The 80% and the 31% swings are the same arithmetic accident pointing in opposite directions, and 2020 sits inside most of the windows. A township-wide move from 280 crashes in 2007 to 177 in 2024 shifts every one of these numbers regardless of what was built. Establishing that a project changed anything needs traffic volumes we do not have and a longer record after each project than 2024 allows.
So the honest version is the one above: this is where crashes happen. Not this is what fixed them.
A crash being on a street does not make the street dangerous. Busier roads collect more crashes because more people drive them, and University Blvd is one of the township’s busiest. Without vehicle counts, none of this is a rate — it is a count, and a count rewards traffic volume as much as it exposes risk.
